This is the introductory class designed to take you from learning the basics of what cancer is, how it manifests itself and moves through the body through the gold standard treatments: Chemotherapy, Surgery, Radiation, Immunotherapy and newer targeted therapies to actually working with clients under treatment confidently, safely and effectively. All of these treatments have profound effects upon the body, many positive and many not so. This immersive training will give you a strong sense of how best to approach and serve this very special population. You will finish this class knowing you will not only be able to keep your clients safe, but you will be able to address the major symptoms, to bring about relief from the severity of those symptoms while oftentimes increasing a sense of well-being. The Art of Boundaries, Intake, and Self-Care topics will be covered as well. Preferred Prerequisites: LMT with 1 year experience or at the permission of the Instructor. Inpatient Training in Oncology Massage‍ ‍

Application Requirements

An introduction to Hospital-based Oncology Massage. Practitioners will have the opportunity to work the newly expanded Inpatient Oncology Floors, Apheresis units, and to visit the Radiation Oncology Center. This is an intensive, 5 full days and 1 half day filled with active learning and hands-on massage sessions in the hospital units. You will apply your foundational practices to the hospital setting and learn when and how to use the pressure scale and the energy work introduced in the previous trainings. You will work closely with the current Oncology Massage Therapists at the Knight Cancer Institute. Prerequisites: LMT, minimum 2 years of practice as an LMT, and the Oncology Massage 24- or 30-hour in-person Foundational class (Providers accepted include: Gayle MacDonald and any OMEA instructor from the past 7 years, Healwell, Corewell Health (formerly Beaumont Hospitals), Greet The Day, or any S4OM approved Provider with in-person requirements). There will be no exceptions to the prerequisites.

This format is designed to incorporate massage sessions with patients on three hospital units: Outpatient Chemo Infusion, Inpatient Medical/Surgical Oncology, and Inpatient Hematology Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant. It is an intensive format created in order to best encapsulate an extraordinary and exceptional hospital-based hands-on experience. There will be 2 online meetings and preparatory readings with written coursework prior to the actual in-person class.

Acupressure for the Medically Challenged (Part 1)

8 hours live online, 6 weeks ~ 8 hours non-contact homework

In this multi-part class, you will learn best practices for incorporating energy work in oncology bodywork and for medically challenged and sensitive clients. You will learn the fundamentals of Jin Shin Acupressure and Eastern Perspectives in Reflexology, and how to incorporate essential oils to enhance the energy work you are using. This is a vibrant and highly interactive class highlighting specific protocols for lessening pain, nausea, anxiety, and insomnia with the additional benefit of increasing a greater sense of well-being.

Geri offers the opportunity for a private training at your facility for your licensed practitioners. A minimum of 6 attendees with a maximum of 12 required for each 3-day workshop. Geri will be glad to discuss how these trainings benefit your clients, your team, and your business.
